About Kodiak
Kodiak is the second largest island in the United States. Located 250 air miles from Anchorage, it is home to 13,500 residents. Kodiak’s diverse economy is supported by the commercial fishing industry, which consistently ranks in the top three or four nationally in terms of both pounds of fish landed and the value of the seafood produced. Kodiak’s two commercial harbors are homeport to over 650 commercial and sport vessels. The Kodiak Shipyard is an open yard with a 600 ton travel lift. A rapidly emerging ship repair and fabrication industry offers welding, fabrication, marine coatings, propulsion, electrical, refrigeration and engine repair services.
The US Coast Guard base is the largest Coast Guard base in the country with 3500 active duty and dependents. The Coast Guard base is home to high endurance cutters, a buoy tender, 5 C130J transport aircraft, and both HH60T and HH-65C helicopters whose missions include search and rescue, law enforcement, aids to navigation and logistics support.
Alaska Aerospace operates Spaceport Kodiak at the Narrow Cape launch facility. Other primary industries are health care, tourism, retail and transportation. Kodiak is the transportation hub for the six remote villages located around the Island.
The Kodiak Island Borough School District operates the high school, middle school, four elementary schools and the schools in the outlying villages.
Providence Kodiak Island Medical Center provides comprehensive health care to residents and visitors of Kodiak Island. Their critical access hospital features 25 acute care beds, including four birthing suites, two psychiatric care beds and two intensive care beds. In addition, Providence Chiniak Bay Elder House, their extended care facility, has 22 long-term care beds.
The Kodiak Area Native Association is a 501(c)3 nonprofit corporation providing health care and social services for the Alaska Natives and our communities throughout the Koniag region. They have been providing resources for improved health and wellbeing for generations since 1966, including Medical, Dental, Behavioral Health, and Community Service Programs.
Renowned as a world class tourist destination, visitors can enjoy cultural activities, fishing, hunting, hiking, sightseeing, whale and bear watching. Recreational opportunities also include all weather sports fields and an enclosed hockey rink.
