Growing Kodiak’s Future Through Our Oceans

At KEDC, we’re tapping into the power of Kodiak’s waters to build a stronger, more sustainable economy. Our Blue Economy Initiatives focus on support those working in mariculture, kelp, oysters, and innovative processing, to create jobs, support local businesses, and keep our island thriving. We’re excited to work with our community to make this vision a reality.

KEDC is growing Kodiak’s economy through supporting sustainable mariculture, creating opportunities with two major grants.

Multi-Use Processing Facility Feasibility Study

Through a grant-funded study, we’re exploring the potential for a multi-use processing facility to support Kodiak’s growing mariculture industry. This project evaluates infrastructure needs, economic impacts, and opportunities for local producers

Mariculture Business Plan Development

Partnering with the UAA Center for Economic Development, we’re crafting a business plan, funded by a USDA grant, to expand kelp and oyster farming. This effort will deliver a roadmap by September 2025, supporting creation of new jobs and strengthening those already working hard in the blue economy area.

Shape Solutions for Kodiak

The Recharge Our Community’s Economy (ROCE) Workshop Series, pronounced like "ROCK," is a unique opportunity for everyone in Kodiak, residents, professionals, Coast Guard families, and business owners alike, to come together and create meaningful change for our island. Brought to Kodiak through a partnership between the Kodiak Economic Development Corporation (KEDC) and Rural Community Assistance Corporation (RCAC), these workshops are designed to help participants uncover local assets, build on Kodiak’s strengths, and turn bold ideas into actionable projects.

What Makes ROCE Different?
