KEDC joins Main Street America

Kodiak Economic Development Corporation announces joining Main Street America and the multicolored diamonds morph into a blue streetlamp overtop of their name

Main Street America leads a movement committed to strengthening communities through preservation-based economic development in older and historic downtowns and neighborhood commercial districts.

Main Street was established as a program of the National Trust for Historic Preservation in 1980 as a way to address the myriad issues facing older and historic downtowns during that time. Working with a nationwide network of coordinating programs and local communities, Main Street has helped over 2,000 communities across the country bring economic vitality back downtown, while celebrating their historic character, and bringing communities together.

KEDC sees membership with Main Street America as a continued progression in successful economic development of Downtown Kodiak and in alignment with current efforts like the Storefront Improvement Program.

Associate Director Melissa Schoenwether, who is working towards Main Street America Institute certification explained,”KEDC shares with MSA the belief that successful economic development is not about what you don’t have, but identifying what you do have and using those resources. Kodiak is unique, and yet we share with communities across America the same opportunities and challenges driven by ever- changing micro and macroeconomic forces. As KEDC continues to partner with stakeholders in the revitalization of Downtown Kodiak, it is important to us to be a strong, valuable resource and an informed advocate promotion the growth of Kodiak’s local economy.” Certification for KEDC will provide Kodiak tools and strategies for results-oriented revitalization efforts, as well as support from a strong network focused on economic growth in Downtowns and Main Streets.

City of Kodiak Mayor Pat Branson, a long time participant and supporter in the Main Street Kodiak program stated, “I am pleased to endorse KEDC’s efforts to restart the Main Street Kodiak program. The City of Kodiak in partnership with KEDC are committed to revitalizing Kodiak’s downtown area. KANA's new Kodiak Marketplace has created an anchor for the downtown that, combined with the Main Street program and the Storefront Improvement Program, will create a vibrant, exciting and attractive downtown retail environment.”
