Kodiak is a resilient, resourceful community, built on hard work, innovation, and a deep connection to the land and sea. Kicking off this week, the ROCE Workshop Series is designed to bring together local business owners, entrepreneurs, community leaders, and residents to tackle key economic challenges and build a more resilient and prosperous future for Kodiak.
This initiative is powered by the Rural Community Assistance Corporation (RCAC), in partnership with the Kodiak Economic Development Corporation (KEDC). Together, we’re creating a space where ideas can turn into action—where people who care about Kodiak’s future can collaborate to solve real problems and uncover new opportunities.
What Is the ROCE Workshop Series?
The Recharge Our Community’s Economy (ROCE) program is more than just a series of discussions. It’s an interactive, solution-driven initiative that brings the community together to create a shared vision for economic growth. Each session will focus on practical strategies for strengthening Kodiak’s economy, covering topics like:
Workforce Development – Addressing labor shortages, building career pathways, and ensuring local businesses have access to skilled workers.
Small Business Support – Providing tools and insights to help local entrepreneurs grow and thrive.
Housing Solutions – Exploring ways to increase workforce housing and improve affordability.
Community-Led Economic Planning – Ensuring that economic growth reflects the needs and priorities of those who live and work in Kodiak.
This hands-on workshop series will connect local stakeholders with experts from RCAC, who specialize in rural economic development and have helped other communities across the West revitalize their economies.

Why This Matters for Kodiak
Economic development doesn’t happen by chance—it takes strategic planning, collaboration, and commitment.
The ROCE Workshop Series is a rare opportunity to bring Kodiak’s business community, civic leaders, and residents together to shape the future.
Here’s what participation means for Kodiak:
Stronger Local Businesses: Workshops will provide actionable insights that help businesses adapt to economic shifts, find new opportunities, and build resilience.
More Job Opportunities: Workforce development discussions will focus on training, hiring, and retaining talent, ensuring long-term career pathways for Kodiak residents.
A Plan for the Future: Instead of reacting to economic challenges, this series will equip Kodiak with a roadmap for sustainable growth and prosperity.
“Kodiak is at a turning point,” says Melissa Schoenwether, Executive Director of KEDC. “With rising housing costs, workforce shortages, and industry changes, we need to come together as a community to tackle these challenges head-on. The ROCE Workshop Series is a chance for business owners, employers, and residents to have a direct hand in shaping Kodiak’s future. This is our moment to build a stronger, more resilient economy, together.”
