DEVELOPING KODIAK

TALENT

“Workforce in Kodiak is like any other scarce resource on our island, it must be cultivated, nurtured, and grown. The Career Expo is designed to do just that; inform, partner and share local opportunities with our young people to grow our workforce and ensure our future Kodiak economy.”

Karl Hertz, Providence Medical Center, KEDC Board President

“I was surprised by how few students knew about what opportunities are available here on island for them. I see this event as a stepping stone to bring these opportunities to the school to help retain students on island in the future workforce.”

—Jascha Zbitnoff, Brechan Construction, KEDC Board member

The success of this event was the result of many local businesses and industries.

“The crew of the Coast Guard Cutter Cypress was honored to attend the Kodiak Economic Development Corporation’s 2024 Career Expo. We love supporting the Kodiak community and we look forward to opportunities like this when we’re able to work with our neighbors on the island. I hope that between our interactions with the students and community members during the Career Expo, cutter tour, and Kodiak Job Fair, we’ve showed the value our crews can provide on a daily basis. If you or anyone you know has interest in joining our Coast Guard family, contact Chief Petty Officer Rob Benavides at (907) 885-4424, or by email, robert.m.benavides@uscg.mil.”

Workforce

Development

The availability of a reliable, skilled workforce is essential to the entire island of Kodiak. That workforce is a vital factor determining local business expansion as well as relocation of businesses here.

KEDC is committed to continuously developing Kodiak’s workforce.

In Spring of 2024, in partnership with KIBSD and local businesses, KEDC partnered with many local agencies, organizations, and businesses to host the second Career Expo. The goal of this event was to help prepare students to be work ready and to provide proof to local employers that these students can be successful at their company.

The Career Expo offered opportunities to tour local businesses, practice interview skills, learn about careers available in our community. Career Expo reinforces that going to work right after graduation doesn’t mean foregoing a chance at higher education; instead, it provides provide a different path to those who choose it, allowing opportunities to learn on the job.

"As a small business owner and employer of many skilled trades, career and workforce development is of the utmost importance to the continued success of my business. The KEDC Career Expo has done an exceptional job at introducing the up and coming workforce to the many opportunities that Kodiak has to offer. I look forward to the continued growth of this event.”
