Why Workforce Is Economic Development in Kodiak

Workforce affects nearly every part of life in Kodiak.

It matters when a business cannot find enough employees. It matters when a young person wants to build a future here but does not know what opportunities are available. It matters when someone is ready for a new career path but needs training, support, or a clearer first step.

That is why workforce is economic development.

KEDC convened the Kodiak Workforce Forum because these conversations often happen in separate places. Employers are talking about hiring and retention. Educators are thinking about how to prepare students for local opportunities. Workforce partners have programs and resources that can help. Community leaders are thinking about long-term stability.

The forum brought those conversations together.

Participants talked about the workforce challenges Kodiak is facing now, including hiring, retention, housing, cost of living, workforce readiness, training needs, and the importance of stronger connections between students, job seekers, employers, and training partners.

The forum was not meant to answer every question in one day. It was a starting point.

The next step is to keep listening.

KEDC is continuing to gather feedback from employers, workers, students, job seekers, and community members. Your experience matters. The more we understand what people are seeing in real life, the better we can support practical workforce conversations, future Career Connections work, and stronger pathways between education, training, and local jobs.

Whether you own a business, manage employees, are looking for work, are thinking about a new career, support students, or simply care about Kodiak’s future, we invite you to share your perspective.

Please take the Kodiak workforce survey and help us better understand what is working, what is difficult, and what support would make a difference.

This work is part of KEDC’s broader role as an Economic Development Organization. We help bring people together, gather useful information, and turn shared concerns into practical next steps.

Thank you to everyone who attended the Workforce Forum, completed earlier surveys, shared feedback, or helped connect KEDC with people and organizations working on workforce issues. Economic development works best when people participate, and your input helps shape what comes next.
